Those aiming for political change often highlight our constrained capacity to imagine alternatives. This limited imagination is seen as a major barrier to the radical responses needed to meet global challenges, from climate breakdown, to widening inequality, to technological disruption.

But one potential contributor to this limitation has been rarely highlighted: how current methods and theories employed by civil society may be counterproductive to their aims, by inherently restricting political potential and possibility. Increasing use of Artificial Intelligence models which default to conventional theories and methodologies only reinforce the risk of this outcome.

When the tools themselves encode the logic of the status quo, advocacy and political efforts for change may end up reinforcing the very power structures we seek to challenge. Tools that Trap Us is a platform for those that wish to work together to prevent that.

Launch conference at LSE

To instigate an exploration of this topic, Future Narratives Lab partnered with the Department of Methodology at LSE to hold an interactive conference, with leading figures from across civil society and academia. Sessions at the event included:

  • Limitations of the Worlds Values Survey
  • How Polling Limits Political Imagination
  • Approaches & Frameworks in the Development Sector
  • Making Sense of ‘Narrative’ in Civil Society
  • The Role of Funding & Philanthropy

You can read a short blog report on the event from co-host Sophie Legros on the LSE website here.

“

Loved the event and thank you for organising. It was really thought provoking and valuable to my work.

“

I found the event incredibly stimulating as the perspectives of so many different sectors were represented and given the space and opportunity to present and develop themes in a collaborative and emergent way.

“

Thank you again for organising such a unique and productive workshop.

Early Careers Network

As a quick follow up to the launch event while we planned further activities, we held an event focussed on those early in their career, looking for opportunities to apply their academic learning in practice in civil society.

After a very positive response, we are currently planning another event for this network – get in touch via the form below if you would like to be notified when this is announced.
