Any organisation aiming to build power and resources in pursuit of a social or political goal requires a firm grasp of narrative: the ability to understand and influence the cultural frames and assumptions that shape discussion and decision making.

In this introductory online course, Future Narratives Lab will share practical tools and examples from several years of working on narrative projects across the world. Civil society groups can use these to enhance their own narrative capacity, allowing them to acquire the resources, insight and alliances needed to confront power at scale.

Building on our popular previous free workshop series, this new course will cover:

  • Understanding & Countering Far-Right Narratives (Tues 6th Oct, 12:30 & 17:30 BST)
  • Translating Complex Research into Powerful Stories (Tues 20th Oct, 12:30 & 17:30 BST)
  • Influencing Publics & Elites in the Attention Age (Tues 3rd Nov, 12:30 & 17:30 GMT)

Each session is 90 minutes long, and includes case studies, specific methods and approaches to take away, and an expert guest speaker. We are offering these courses free of charge to maximise the capacity-building for civil society which is core to our mission, but donations are welcomed on a ‘pay what you can’ basis.

Update: In response to many requests, we are now running a repeat of each session at 17:30pm on each date.

Workshop 1: Understanding & Countering Far-Right Narratives

Pivotal to the recent success of far-right political movements across the world has been their ability to portray themselves as avatars of popular ‘common sense’, contrasted with a decadent and oppressive cultural elite.

In this workshop we will explore how Narrative Analysis & Mapping can help unpack and explain the workings of this key aspect of the appeal of the contemporary far-right, the historical roots and implications of its aesthetic nature, why many common opposing responses have backfired, and the basis of more effective approaches.

This session is for you if:

  • Your organisation is working to understand and/or counter far-right movements and their narratives.
  • You will benefit from understanding their historical and aesthetic dimensions.
  • You want to understand how Narrative Mapping & Analysis can be used to build more effective strategies.

The session will be led by Future Narratives Lab Executive Director Daniel Stanley. The 12:30pm BST session will also include a conversation between FNL Strategy Director Sarah Stein Lubrano and guest Marcus Bösch, author of the Understanding TikTok substack, and expert in digital culture & propaganda in the age of AI.

Workshop 2: Translating Complex Research into Powerful Stories

Many coalitions and campaigns produce in-depth research and evidence to help make the case for their cause. But turning this into accessible and persuasive communications is an ongoing challenge. In this workshop Future Narratives Lab will draw upon our experience working with policy researchers and campaigning coalitions to explore the most effective ways to take your existing research and use it to create straightforward inspiring stories that will draw in a range of audiences to further engagement.

This session is for you if:

  • You or your organisation produces complex or in-depth research or evidence.
  • You want to understand straightforward techniques for simplifying this for broader audiences.
  • You see the potential for expanding the influence and reach of your research outputs.

The session will be led by Future Narratives Lab Executive Director Daniel Stanley, and include a conversation with FNL Strategy Director Sarah Stein Lubrano, author of Don’t Talk About Politics: How to Change 21st-Century Minds.

Workshop 3: Influencing Publics & Elites in the Attention Age

Campaigns and coalitions working to build influence on social issues have to confront an inherent challenge: how to balance strategies that can engage mass publics and build popular legitimacy, with those that speak to and engage elite audiences, closer to political decision-making? This is only heightened as technological change continues to fracture and disrupt the media landscape.

In this workshop, Future Narratives Lab will explore a framework for civil society to build more integrated influence strategies, with clear roles for publics, elites and media, and the relationship between each, enabling more efficient and coordinated campaigns and communications, flexible enough to adapt to the rapidly changing attention economy.

This session is for you if:

  • Your work involves building support and influence within public & elite audiences.
  • You want to create more effective and coordinated political influence strategies.
  • You want to understand the impact of the attention economy on this challenge.

The session will be led by Future Narratives Lab Executive Director Daniel Stanley, and include a conversation between an expert Guest Speaker and FNL Strategy Director Sarah Stein Lubrano.
